Rules: You have to buy a brand new car in 1953 what would it be?
For me it would be a 1953 Lincoln Capri with a 5.6L V8 and 225hp. This car was the winner of the the 1953 Careera Panamericana in the Touring Car class. The race was a grueling 5 day and nine stage race through Mexico crossing over 2,000 miles.

Easiest question of the day
1953 Hudson Hornet
(I actually owned one 10 years later)
![]() 10/16/2015 at 11:07 |

I was torn between the Hudson and Capri but the Capri is the less obvious choice so I went with it. But I do want a Hudson quite badly.

1953 Mercury pickup. I think they’re so cool!

That’s the right answer.

My favorite Corvette. I don’t even care that it had a 6. I wasn’t meant to be a performance car. It was meant to show off.

Obvious answer is obvious. 1954 Vette
![]() 10/16/2015 at 11:10 |

This would have been a tough question for me up until recently. Bring a Trailer had the car below up for auction a few days ago, I don’t think it met the reserve but it’s definitely what 1953 Trip would buy.

I’ll take a lovely Austin Healey 100. 1953 was a lovely year for cars. All these great, soft curves.

Easy, Fiat 8V Supersonic. A 2.0L screaming V8 wrapped up in a body styled by Ghia? Hell yes.

Volvo S80.

That’s a really tough one. One of my favourite eras.

Too many choices, and the best looking Packard Caribbean hadn’t arrived, so I’m going to say DeSoto Firedome.

That looks like it should be a concept

I never cared much for the 356
![]() 10/16/2015 at 11:18 |

This was an era were British cars looked behind the times with styling. It isn’t a bad thing but just a statement.

I think you might have missed the point...

I guess the 54 was for sale in 53. I will allow it.
![]() 10/16/2015 at 11:20 |

I like them. But honestly, the main reason I chose it is because if I kept it in good condition until this present time it’d be worth a ton. lol
![]() 10/16/2015 at 11:20 |
|
Yup. More lord than a roomful of dukes.
![]() 10/16/2015 at 11:21 |
|
And that’s the exact reason why I would choose it. The 50’s were not my favorite era at all. If I could pick a decade to be stuck in(automotive wise) it would hands down be the 30’s.
![]() 10/16/2015 at 11:21 |
|
If you’re going down that road, there are many, many better picks. Early fifties Ferraris go for really stupid money.

It looks so out of date!
![]() 10/16/2015 at 11:22 |

Yeah, I thought about that too. I just like the look of the 356 though. It served multiple purposes.

Lovely cars, but I wonder how many people know that’s the kind of thing Bond is supposed to drive? In the books, he bought a convertible one in battleship gray.

Rolls-Royce Phantom IV, exclusive to heads of state, this was delivered in 1953 so it counts.

It could almost be classified as a concept, only 8 were hand-built before production stopped and most of them were immediately modified by their owners.

One of those giant ass 8 passenger Chrysler Windsor Sedans. I've always liked those and 53 or 54 (don't remember) was the last year of production.

Fun fact: These were actually sold only in white.

Almost talked the wife into going to buy a “ratrod” one. guy chopped the roof about 4 inches, if he had finished the lift panel on the back of it I would have bought it, but that window wasn’t done (need replacement glass as well as cutting out the 4 inches on the back)
![]() 10/16/2015 at 13:08 |

As a lover of all things fast, I think I’d do the same thing as you. No replacement for displacement!

That’s actually the concept for the ‘53, but it works :) You’ll have to wait ‘till ‘54 for red, though.

Nah, I can just get it painted.

Conversation having died down somewhat on this post, I figure I’ll bug you. Is the Lincoln still in puppy-looking-for-a-home mode? Reason is, I said I’d keep you updated on my capacity/interest in it, so I shall. I got a personal loan this week for a number of things including some Ranchero parts, and I find that gives me enough extra slosh to contemplate really silly things. Further, I have been assured I will be negotiating the extent (not existence) of a raise some time next week (and the boss says I *am* overdue and have increased substantially in value, etc. etc.) Further further, I have established that the twin-axle utility trailer available to me is capable of 5,000lb (meaning it’s within the margin of :X) and is available as long as I put tires on it, and I have two trucks available capable of towing over 8k. Sooooo...
![]() 10/16/2015 at 15:55 |
|
Someone who is a lurker on Oppo actually contacted me about it. He is coming up from N.C to look at it Sunday. He seems to be serious bringing a trailer and everything. If he says no I will let you know ASAP on Sunday.
![]() 10/16/2015 at 15:57 |

Okay. No worries then. NC? I might actually see it one of these days, depending where it is, then.
![]() 10/16/2015 at 18:39 |

The guys said if he bought it he would try to get authorship so everyone could follow the build
![]() 10/16/2015 at 18:43 |
|
Tell him there’s an NC Oppo (western NC) who’s been following it since the beginning and would help out for beer. Erm, not to further encourage him to buy it instead of me as such, but it’s a truthful statement.
![]() 10/16/2015 at 18:48 |
|
I will be sure to tell him after he buys it. If he does of course
![]() 10/16/2015 at 18:56 |

Assuming he does, that may push me toward another set of unwise barge purchases instead. Because YOLO. Like, say,
